UU Amherst Book Group next met on Sunday, May 31 — our last gathering for this church year. At that time, the following information was shared and plans made:
Underground Book Club, a group of liberal women largely from Akron and Newstead, meets third Thursdays at noon at Bestcellar Book Bar. Our book for June is *Everyone is Lying to You* by Jo Piazza. Let Marie know if you’d like to be added to the organizer’s email list.
Tickets for Just Buffalo’s 2026-27 BABEL season are on sale. https://www.justbuffalo.org/events/babel-2026-2027-season-subscriptions/ The authors speaking will be Sigrid Nunez (October), Kaven Akbar (November), Amor Towles (March), Tayari Jones (April). Events take place at Kleinhans, but are also live-streamed and the recording is available for ticketholders online for about a week afterward.
Discussion of meeting time/day: It was decided to keep meeting after service on Sundays, but we’ll schedule for 4th Sundays instead of the “last” Sunday, and reschedule when conflicts arise with church events.
Our summer lunch together will be Tuesday, July 14, from noon to 2 pm in the semi-private book club room at Bestcellar Book Bar, 9560 Main Street, Clarence (across from Gunnville Road and Clarence HS). Attendees must purchase a beverage or food on site. You can preview the menus at https://bestcellarbookbar.com/. There’s no specific assignment – we’ll discuss whatever we’re reading over the summer.
September book choices: *1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History and How It Shattered a Nation* by Andrew Ross Sorkin (non-fiction narrative financial history) OR *Trust* by Hernan Diaz (A Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about a wealthy 1920s Wall Street couple’s rise to power, told through multiple competing narratives)
