UU Amherst Book Club
UU Amherst’s Book Club meets the last Sunday each month (September through May) at noon in the church Library/Living Room. We get together once over the summer for a potluck luncheon.
Reading material alternates monthly between picking a general TOPIC for the month (for which participants can choose any relevant book they’d like to read), and choosing one “common read” BOOK. Choices of books and topics are made democratically. The result has been lively discussion on a wide range of genres—fiction, nonfiction, mystery, social issues, women’s issues, history, to name a few. In the past year, we have considered the topics Happiness, Dinosaurs, UU History, Gratitude, and any book by Anne Lamott. Books included Night Watchman (Erdrich), A Carpenter’s Life as Told by Houses, Daughters of the Flower Fragrant Garden, The Light Pirate, All Souls: A Family Story from Southie, and Lessons in Chemistry.
All are welcome to attend the discussions, whether or not you’ve “done the reading.”
