Clothing Ministry
The Clothing Ministry was originally created to supply warm coats, hats, and gloves to our neighbors in need. Our mission was expanded when we saw how quickly items were moving. Our Clothing ministry is located next to the Food Pantry. It provides clothing yearround for all seasons, and includes accessories, shoes, boots, purses and clothes for Men, Women & Children.
Our Ministry accomplishes two important goals:
- Providing clothing to anyone, with no questions asked
- An environmental way to keep useable clothing from landfills.
The clothing industry accounts for approximately 10% of the world’s carbon emissions and up to 20% of it’s wastewater. Sadly, the average item of clothing is worn only 14 times, with 87% ultimately incinerated or tossed in a landfill. The clothing in landfills generates methane gas as it decomposes and leaches toxic dyes and chemicals.
In the span of our first year, we provided over 1000+ articles of clothing and accessories. We
have heard from patrons and UU members that they appreciate the beautiful, clean clothes. In our own UU corner of the world, we are doing our part to fight “fast fashion”. Clothing that tends to be cheaply made, and not ethically produced. Factory workers across the globe are often paid a pittance and subject to workplace abuse.
We welcome anyone, regardless of financial need, to check out our cabinet and rack near the Amherst Little Free Pantry and pick something to wear. You will help your wallet and your planet. Donations are accepted and can be placed in the donation bin, in the coat closet. Please, donate only clean clothes with no stains, rips or missing buttons. We can also accept donations of skirt and pants hangers.
Donations welcome: Please contact Diane Tucker for information.
