Small labeled bins for:
Used eyeglasses with frames
Used hearing aids
Dash’s Market receipts
“Labels for Education” from some product boxes
Aluminum pull-tab rings from tops of soda, soup, pet food cans, etc. (If hard to remove, they are probably not aluminum)
Cell Phones (for recycling for charitable uses)
Paper only- In Abitibi Paper Recycling Bin (yellow & green) located in the parking lot to your right as you exit the church. Please no cardboard, only newspapers, catalogs, junk mail, magazines, office and school papers
OTHER RECYCLING OUTLETS
CFO light bulbs and fluorescent tubes– Home Depot, Lowe’s and Valu
Rechargeable batteries-Home Depot, Lowe’s and Valu, Amherst Highway Dept. (for Amherst residents only)
Non-rechargeable batteries– It is not illegal to throw away these batteries in most states. They can be disposed of at one of the county-wide collection events. There are safety risks to grouping large numbers of batteries together (as in saving them up for such an event); Keep them separated from each other. Duracell’s alkaline batteries since 1993 have contained no mercury and are safest to put in the trash.
Electronics-Amherst Highway Dept. accepts television, computers, cell phones, & all other electronics at their location on North Forest between Sheridan and Maple. If the white shed provided is full, you may leave your electronics outside it on the pavement. This service is for Amherst residents only. Best Buy stores will also take, without charge, all electronics and related items.
Ink cartridges– These items can be recycled at Office Max or Office Depot where you can receive credit with a rewards or “perks” card.
Smoke detectors– photoelectric ones may be put in the trash (although the battery should be taken out first), but newer styles work by ionization and contain a bit of radioactive material which must not be thrown away. First Alert Corp. And Kidde alarms can be sent back to the manufacturer for recycling; however there may be a small fee in addition to the mailing costs. The manufacturer’s name is on the alarm and you should check with them about their return policy for either type of alarm.
Carbon monoxide detectors-These do not contain radiation and may be thrown away after the batteries. However, it is a good idea to check with the manufacturer to see if they will recycle them.
Medications-Prescription and OTC medicines no longer needed can be deposited at designated police stations in specially marked boxes at each location. Do no put them in the toilet or the trash. A few suggested sites are ECC North Campus, Public Safety Bldg. lobby, 6205 Main St., Wmsville; ECMC lobby, 462 Grier St. Buffalo; Clarence Police Substation, 6185 Goodrich Rd., Clarence
Latex Paint-Latex can be put in the trash after it is mixed with kitty litter and/or dried up.
Oil based paint, household cleaners, aerosol cans, lawn chemical, and other hazardous waste-will have to wait for a collection event to be disposed of. Another option would be a hazardous waste disposal company such as Hazman who will take just about anything, but it will cost you. Information about this company can be found at www.hasmanusa.com or a 716-998-8073.
Keep your eye open for county-wide recycling events, usually a couple of time a year and their list of acceptable items.
We will update this information from time to time as it changes
