May 9 Julia Ward Howe: Let Us Celebrate Mothers (Day)
Guest Speaker Kristin Chambers
19th century writer, lecturer, abolitionist, suffragist, and Unitarian, Julia Ward Howe was an early advocate for a special day to celebrate and commemorate mothers. She achieved fame as the author of the Civil War anthem “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and she co-founded the American Woman Suffrage Association. Kristin Chambers, a long-time UU and retired professor of Social Work, culled through Ms. Ward’s writings to create this soliloquy.
