Duality of Safety
I have been thinking a lot about the meaning of safety in community lately. So, instead of a blessing this month, I’d like to offer a thought:
We all want to feel safe to be ourselves, safe to speak our truth, safe to show up just as we are. That’s what real community is about: creating a space where people can trust thatthey’ll be met with kindness, respect, and care. It’s not always easy but when we commit to listening, learning, and making room for each other, we build a truly sacred place where everyone belongs.
At the same time, safety also means knowing when to set boundaries. Being open and welcoming doesn’t mean we have to accept harm or hatred. We can stand for love and justice while also protecting ourselves and each other from those who would do us harm. Holding this balance takes wisdom and courage, but it’s possible. We can create spaces that are both compassionate and strong, both open-hearted and protected—because real safety means looking out for one another in every way that matters.
Vertical Garden
Last month in Faith Development, we welcomed in Annie and her vertical garden! The youth picked out seeds to grow, planted them, and started to take part in the growing process. We’ll be running this program through May 4th so feel free to stop down in the FD room and see our progress!
Pride Parade
Buffalo’s Pride Parade is Sunday, June 1st, and UU Amherst will be showing up to march in support and solidarity! We’ll publish more details (time, location to meet, etc.) in the coming weeks. If you have any questionsin the meantime please reach out to Katie Cosgrove, dfd@uuamherst.org.
