Chalica was created in 2005 and sprang from conversations among folks wishing to create a December holiday that would be meaningful for Unitarian Universalists.

Chalica is seven days long and runs from the first Monday in December through Sunday. Each day represents a different UU Principle. A chalice is lit and gifts may be given and received. Gifts can be made, bought, verbal, written, or acts of compassion. The important thing is to celebrate our Unitarian Universalist Living Tradition!

One of many ways of celebrating Chalica

Here are some ideas for celebrating Chalica:

Day 1: We light our chalice for the inherent worth and dignity of every person.

  • A thank-you card celebrating difference
  • Help someone in need

Day 2: We light our chalice for justice, equity and compassion in human relations.

  • Donate clothes to a worthy organization
  • Display kindness & care to those around you

Day 3: We light our chalice for acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth.

  • Give gifts to help UUs on their spiritual path
  • Extend words of peace or forgiveness

Day 4: We light our chalice for a free & responsible search for truth and meaning.

  • Teach someone something (or learn!)
  • Give or read a book

Day 5: We light our chalice for the right of conscience & the use of the democratic process.

  • Help a committee at church
  • Host a dinner to celebrate democracy

Day 6: We light our chalice for the goal of world peace, liberty and justice for all.

  • Write a letter for Amnesty International
  • Help your social justice committee hold a fundraiser

Day 7: We light our chalice for respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

  • Start a compost or recycle
  • Hold an outdoor worship (dress warmly!)
