Caring for One Another
UU Amherst’s Caring For One Another Team was started in May 2011 by Suzanne Christ (UUCA Faith Community Nurse from 2011-2016). Through her diligent efforts and guidance the team has evolved into what it is today.
The Caring For One Another Team contributes to the church’s mission to foster more compassion and to help build a Beloved Community. It is composed of dedicated, caring, concerned volunteers who reach out to those within the UU Amherst community experiencing health, family and/or personal needs.
Outreach includes sending cards for various occasions, making phone calls to members who need support, visiting those in their homes or in assisted living/nursing home facilities, therapy dog visits, and occasional meal offerings. The team developed an Unexpectedly Homebound Resource List (2017) that may prove useful; please note that some information on this list may no longer be current.
Two sisters who are dedicated members of the Caring group provide occasional meals to church members on an as-needed basis. Their recipes are a regular feature in the newsletter and are easy and use fresh vegetables. They have included vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and/or ethnic meals.
The Hearts and Hands (H&H) program is recognized by the UUCA. This is a not-for-profit, neighbor-helping-neighbor organization. Our church encourages members to volunteer for this program, and the church has an annual share the plate collection with all the proceeds given to the H&H program.
